About
Welcome!
The Emily at Emily's Project is me, Emily Kaminski. I'm a teacher turned frugal stay-at-home mom who filled a prescription one day and found a problem that needed attention.
I went to the pharmacy one day not expecting a large bill. After all, I have insurance. My husband and I pay dearly for our health insurance, and so I was very surprised/angry to be told at the pharmacy that my insurance designated my prescription as tier 3 and wouldn’t even begin to help until the cost was $60. Once I called my insurance and figured out what “tier 3” and “formulary” meant, I got curious and called several local pharmacies just to see what their “cash price” was. I assumed that prescriptions would be somewhat like gas or groceries and be about the same everywhere so I was really shocked to find that my prescription was $37 cheaper at another pharmacy. I started to wonder how many more people like me were victims of assuming prices were about the same everywhere.
A short time later, when I looked up the iodine content in my prescription prenatal vitamins (a new report came out on the importance of iodine for pregnancy), I found out they had been recalled a month ago. I called the pharmacy and manufacturer and learned that nobody was required to tell me since the recall was voluntary. I was skeptical as to why it was no longer okay to sell, but it was still okay for me to take.
So in talking with friends, family, and other people all around town and researching prescription drugs and related healhcare topics, I found a lot information available that we generally don't talk about, but probably should. There is information available that is particularly valuable before one is sick or in need of care.
I wanted to be part of a community of people talking about healthcare and prescription experiences from a consumer prespective so I built it. I've created a site that gives people a place to learn, recieve alerts, and share experiences with insurance, prescription prices, the drugs themselves, and underlying health issues in a helpful way. If you take a prescription drug or ever need one, this site is for you.
Sincerely,
Emily
